SHICKSHINNY ‚?? Mayor Beverly Moore hopes that her son‚??s vehicle was not targeted by an arsonist for political reasons.

Her son‚??s Mercedes Benz sport utility vehicle was torched early Monday morning while it was parked outside her Canal Street home, a state police fire marshal determined later that day.

Asked whether she thought her son‚??s vehicle was targeted, Moore said she had no idea.

‚??There are some things going on in town that are upsetting some people. But for someone to (set fire to the SUV) for that reason is yet to be seen,‚?Ě Moore said.

Moore at first declined to specify what things going on in town were upsetting some people. But when asked directly about grants to some flood victims from a private foundation, she confirmed that was the issue.

Upon questioning from Councilman Kevin Morris at the Nov. 7 council meeting, Melissa Weber, secretary/treasurer, said $25,000 in flood relief funding provided by the foundation was dispensed through a nonpartisan committee consisting of Brian Caverly, Pastor Terry Hughes, Gary Powlus, Council President Rosalie Whitebread and Weber.

The Times Leader learned that some council members and friends and family members of council members were awarded flood recovery grants in the amounts of either $450 or $1,000 from the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation.

‚??Seeing who received grants and speaking to those who were denied grants, there‚??s a big conflict. People who had a lot of damage to their first floor were told, ‚??Well, you have flood insurance.‚?? Other people who had damage to their basements got grants. ‚?Ľ Along with that, people on the list got a grant and they walked away from their house,‚?Ě Moore said.

Asked if she thought her pressing the issue with council might have led to the arson of her son‚??s vehicle, Moore said she hoped not.

‚??But if it is, I guess I‚??m on the right track,‚?Ě she said.
