PLYMOUTH – Supporters of Councilman Bill Dixon have planned a fundraiser to help him defray the legal costs of trying to keep his seat on council.

Borough residents Trinace Cousin and Cherie Stone have spearheaded the Love Bill Dixon Benefit Buffet to take place Dec. 15, at the Plymouth American legion Post 463.

We've known him for a while and stand behind him. I think Bill is a wonderful man; he would do anything for anybody, anything for the kids, Cousin said of Dixon.

Stone agreed, saying she met Dixon through coaching youth football and called him a good guy. It's not right what they're doing to him.

In November, a four-member majority of Plymouth Borough Council voted to hire special legal counsel – attorney Charles Coslett – to investigate Dixon's criminal history and determine if his past crimes require his removal from the council seat he won last year.

Dixon, 62, was arrested in 1971 on a drug charge and in 1975 on a burglary charge, serving time at SCI Dallas. It was those felony convictions that Coslett believes constitute the infamous crimes mentioned in the state Constitution that can preclude someone from holding public office.

And although Dixon recently received a pardon from Gov. Tom Corbett for those state charges, he also was convicted of a federal charge – conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine – that Coslett believes will cost Dixon his council post.

Dixon has said he couldn't adjust to civilian life after returning from serving in Vietnam and took the easy way out. But since then, he's turned his life around, becoming a model citizen and heavily involved in his community through civic organizations and especially youth sports.

Dixon hired Kingston attorney James Haggerty to represent him because he believes the attempt to have him removed from council is political retaliation and a waste of taxpayer money.

Many people in Plymouth agree. As of Thursday, a Support Bill Dixon Facebook page had 345 members. It's also where resident Scott Cannon posted the idea for a benefit to help defray Dixon's legal costs.

Everybody knows what Bill does for this community. He puts every extra hour he has into this community, whether it's with kids' sports programs or even just cleaning up. … That's why the community is behind him, Cannon said.
