Phelps' horse wins

HALLENDALE BEACH, Fla. — Cerro, a 3-year-old colt partly owned by 18-time Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps, won the $54,500 third race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

Phelps and his former coach, Bob Bowman, share an ownership interest in the Ireland-bred colt, which runs in the colors of Team Valor International. Cerro is trained by Graham Motion, who oversaw 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.

Cerro ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.29, winning by 2½ lengths. He paid $6, $3 and $2.40.

Itsmyluckyday takes Holy Bull Stakes

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Itsmyluckyday won the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes on Saturday, overtaking heavily favored Shanghai Bobby in the stretch and breaking the Gulfstream Park record for 1 1/16 miles.

Ridden by Elvis Trujillo, Itsmyluckyday finished in 1:41.81 and paid $11.40 to win the Grade 3 Kentucky Derby prep race.

It was the first loss for Shanghai Bobby after winning his first five races.

Villanueva, Cubs complete 2-year deal

CHICAGO — Pitcher Carlos Villanueva and the Chicago Cubs have completed a $10 million, two-year contract.

Villanueva will earn $5 million annually as part of Saturday's deal. The sides had agreed to the contract in mid-December, pending a successful physical.

The 29-year-old right-hander spent the past two seasons with Toronto and went 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA last year in 16 starts and 22 relief appearances. He slid to 0-3 with an 8.10 ERA in five September starts.

Nats 2B says he had torn rotator cuff

WASHINGTON — Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa says he played with a torn rotator cuff in his left, non-throwing, shoulder late last season.

The switch-hitter decided not to have offseason surgery and instead rehab the injury. He spoke to reporters Saturday at a Nationals fan festival.

Espinosa was hurt when he dived for a ball in a game in early September. On Sept. 17, Espinosa got a cortisone shot to relieve the pain. The next day, he said he had a bone bruise in his shoulder socket.

He hit .247 with 17 homers, 56 RBIs and 189 strikeouts for the NL East champions in 2012. But over the team's last 20 regular-season games, Espinosa batted only .188.
