WILKES-BARRE - Mayor Tom Leighton announced a “one-strike” policy for landlords in response to a spike in violent crime in the city.
He proposed an amendment to an existing ordinance so that a rental unit or an entire rental property can be shut down 6 months for any narcotics or weapons charge.
The ordinance “creates higher standards of responsibility for rental property owners and its occupants,” Leighton said.
The “get tough” ordinance was crafted over the past several weeks and will be put before city council for a first reading at its Aug. 13 meeting. It requires two readings before it can be enacted.
