Cougars edge Comets in girls hoops

WRIGHT TWP. — Hazleton Area rallied in the fourth quarter to top Crestwood 63-60 on Thursday in Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball action.

The Cougars only trailed by one point entering the final quarter then outscored the Comets by four in the final stanza to pull out the victory. Alyssa Sitch engineered the offense with 21 points. Mackenzie Yori tallied 15, and Lexi Wolk chipped in with 10.

Three players scored 57 of the Comets’ 60 points. Maddie Ritsick led the way with 27, followed by Rebecca Rutkowski (17) and Taryn Wojnar (13).

Hanover Area 72, MMI Prep 46

Hanover Area pitted three players in double figures. Asdone Hooper connected on four 3-pointers for 26 points. Brittany Miller scored 14, and Amber Growhowski supplied 10.

MMI Prep was led by Rachel Stanziola’s 17 points. Kristen Purcell had 10 points.

Holy Redeemer 68, Wyoming Area 20

Alexis Lewis led the charge for the Royals with 36 points.

Dallas 42, Berwick 33

Talia Kosierowski (14 points) and Katy Comitz (12) helped rally the Mountaineers from a halftime deficit to win on the road. Dallas held Berwick to just nine points in the second half.

The Bulldogs got 12 points from Taylor Montana in the loss.

Coughlin 38, Tunkhannock 29

A 16-point fourth quarter allowed the Crusaders to catapult past the Tigers. Savannah Robinson led the charge with 12 points, and Marissa Ross totaled 10.

Maegan Wrubel was the Tigers’ top scorer with eight.

Nanticoke 65, GAR 53

The Trojans trailed after the first quarter; however, seven 3-pointers helped Nanticoke prevail. Four players reached double figures for Nanticoke. Riley Klepadlo registered 18 points. Deanna Thomas (17), Heidi Kile (13) and Amber Grohowski each helped the Trojans.

Brea Seabrook was the game’s top scorer with 20. Majeedah Nealy manufactured 17, and Bre Mosier chipped in with 10.

Lake-Lehman 31, Northwest 29

The Black Knights were able to avert an upset down the stretch. Lake-Lehman trailed by three at the break and outlasted the Rangers in a low-scoring affair. Cayle Spencer produced 14 points.

Emily Buerger had seven for the Rangers.

Meyers 81, Wyoming Seminary 54

The Mohawks found the scoring touch with 81 points. Meyers outscored the Blue Knights 46-16 in the first half.

Quitteriua Gross tabbed 20 points. Quinniea Gross (17), Gianna Skaff (14) and Salimah Biggs (12) each came through for Meyers.

Gabbie Volpetti hit four 3-pointers for 12 points for Wyoming Seminary.
