Now in his sixth month at the helm of the Nittany Lions, James Franklin has basically had his pick of top prospects from Pennsylvania. The lone exception in the early going? Cornerback.
The Keystone State boasts two very highly rated corners for the 2015 recruiting class in Philadelphia's John Reid and Pittsburgh's Jordan Whitehead. Both have offers nationwide and both have played their recruitments fairly close to the chest. Both may very well wait to take their official visits through the fall or winter before picking a school.
With that in mind, Penn State and Franklin have been keeping close tabs on other corner prospects. On Sunday morning, one of them jumped aboard.
Myles Hartsfield, a star athlete out of Sayreville War Memorial High School in the northern tip of New Jersey, announced on his Twitter account that he had given a verbal commitment to Franklin and the Lions.
Lions247 first reported Hartsfield's pledge to Penn State.
Hartsfield (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) is rated three stars in the 247Composite rankings and picked the Lions over home-state school and new Big Ten rival Rutgers.
Apart from being a standout at running back, corner and safety, Hartsfield showed his ability on the track, winning a major triple jump championship, breaking the meet record in the process.
The commitment brings Penn State's 2015 class back up to 16 players after the Lions lost linebacker Josh Barajas to Notre Dame last month. The Lions currently hold the No. 3 class in the country, behind only Alabama and Clemson, with eight months still left to go until signing day.
