The Nicholson Heritage Association (NHA) will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday to provide the community with an update on an initiative to rehabilitate the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Station, which was built in 1849.

The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. at the Nicholson Fire Company Hall. It is open to the public.

Purchased by the NHA in June 2012 with donations from individuals, businesses and a Pepsi Refresh Project grant, the historic site will house the Nicholson Tourism Center following renovations. The NHA completed a feasibility study earlier this year and received an Endless Mountains Heritage Region grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“We are aiming to provide a peak into the past for visitors and residents alike by showing the traditional role of the railroad station, the center of the community,” Josh Stull, a media contact for the NHA, said.

Stull said the new tourism center will attract visitors to the region and even be used for community events.

Established in 1989, the NHA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preservation in the region. Apart from the railroad station project, the NHA is preparing for the 100th anniversary celebration of the Nicholson Bridge in 2015.

“Preserving our area’s unique historic sites is important because these sites, and even antique memorabilia, provide insights on how our predecessors lived and worked,” Stull said.
