(AP) Davis Love III and Stuart Appleby shot 4-under 66 on Thursday for a share of the lead with four other players after the first round of the St. Jude Classic.
Harris English, Nathan Green, Martin Flores and Glen Day also pushed their way into the lead on a day where at least three others had a piece of the top spot lead at some point.
Defending champ Dustin Johnson was 5 under through six holes, taking advantage of near perfect conditions at the TPC Southwind with a temperature in the low 80s and only a slight breeze early. But Johnson finished with a 67 and was tied with 10 others including David Toms, a two-time winner here, and Shawn Stefani, who was tied for the lead before he hit into a fairway bunker and bogeyed No. 18.
Brandt Snedeker, currently No. 6 in the world, opened with a 70. Boo Weekley, who won at Colonial, shot a 68 and was tied with seven others. Phil Mickelson had a 71.
REGIONS TRADITION
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Jeff Sluman shot a 7-under 65 at Shoal Creek to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the first round in the Regions Tradition, the second of five Champions Tour majors.
Sluman, who had eight birdies, and Couples both had their only bogeys on No. 16 at Shoal Creek. The Legends of Golf winner with Brad Faxon in April, Sluman matched his best opening round score on the Champions Tour.
Couples, the Presidents Cup captain and World Golf Hall of Famer, made a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 sixth hole and a 30-footer for birdie on the next hole. His only blemish was a bogey on the par-3 16th when he overshot the green and landed just into the line of spectators.
Duffy Waldorf and Peter Senior shot 67, and Mark Calcavecchia, Michael Allen, David Frost and Corey Pavin followed at 68. Two-time defending champion Lehman was one of 11 players with a 69
LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) Steady rain punctuated by heavy downpours forced the postponement of the first round of the LPGA Championship.
The LPGA Tour’s second major of the year will begin Friday morning, the second round will be staged on Saturday, and the players will attempt to complete 36 holes on Sunday.
Two weeks ago at the Bahamas LPGA Classic, the course was closed for two days because of severe flooding, and when the tournament finally got under way it was shortened to 36 holes over three days.
LYONESS OPEN
ATZENBRUGG, Austria (AP) England’s Tom Lewis shot a 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead over Dutchman Joost Luiten after the opening round of the Lyoness Open.
Englishmen Graeme Storm, Richard McEvoy and Simon Dyson were three strokes back at 66 along with France’s Alexander Levy. Defending champion Bernd Wiesberger of Austria opened with a 68.
