The Luzerne County Historical Society will offer free admission to its museum Saturday in honor of its 155th anniversary. Current exhibits include Olga Treskoff and The Miracle of the Bells, The Wonderful Story of Planters Peanuts and Native Americans in Wyoming Valley.
The museum is behind the Osterhout Free Library, 69 S. Franklin St.
A West Scranton man was arraigned Thursday after allegedly robbing a Scranton bank and holding police at bay at a motel.
Police said Shane Savage, 26, robbed the Wells Fargo Bank on Meadow Avenue at gunpoint shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Scranton Police Chief Carl Graziano said he couldn’t detail exactly what led police to the Moosic Motor Inn on Birney Avenue because the case is still under investigation, but he did say it was a series of events building from one to the next that led police to find Savage there around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
After surrendering around 10 p.m., Savage was taken to a hospital for a minor arm injury. Savage was to be arraigned on robbery and related charges as well as a charge of terroristic threats, Graziano said.
A Berwick man pleaded guilty Thursday to homicide by motor vehicle while driving drunk in connection with a crash that killed an elderly Berwick woman.
Theodore Luciw, 51, of Hosick’s Road, was charged in July with causing the Jan. 4, 2012 crash in Salem Township on Route 11 that killed 84-year-old Rachel Wolfe.
A blood-alcohol test revealed Luciw had an alcohol level of 0.263 percent, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Luciw entered a guilty plea to homicide by motor vehicle, two counts of drunken driving and one count each of careless driving and reckless driving before Luzerne County Judge David Lupas.
The Barnes & Noble Wilkes-King’s Bookstore, 7 S. Main St., will welcome participants from the Wilkes University Center for Global Diversity Study Abroad Essay Contest today.
Student and faculty participants will be reading their essays in the café area starting at 6:30 pm.
The Wyoming Valley Airport in Wyoming will receive a $450,000 state grant to design and build 30 new hangars, Gov. Tom Corbett’s office said Thursday.
The airport is one of 10 in the state that will receive a total of $10 million in grants through the Capital Budget/Transportation Assistance Program, which is funded through state capital bond dollars in the General Fund budget. The grants leverage more than $11 million in local matching funds.
