(AP) Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Cory Booker has shown appreciation for Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at a charter school ribbon-cutting in Newark.

The Newark mayor calls his expression of thanks to Christie “guv love.” It came Wednesday during a difficult stretch in his Senate race, when he could benefit from Christie’s popularity.

Christie is officially backing Republican Steve Lonegan (LAHN’-uh-guhn) but remains close to Booker and has found common ground on charter schools.

Pollsters say Booker’s lead has tightened but remains comfortable as Lonegan has attacked him over his closeness to celebrities and his many out-of-state trips.

Lonegan rolled out a red carpet outside a restaurant Monday to mock Booker’s simultaneous appearance at a California fundraiser with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

A recent poll of likely voters showed Booker leading by 12 percentage points.
