Lelia Virginia (May) Polander, 85, of East Fifth Street, Berwick, peacefully went to join her soul mate on Monday, Feb. 11 at her home.

Born Nov. 23, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Dewitt Henry and Sarah (Basham) May. After graduating from Meyers High School, she worked as a telegraph operator at Western Union during World War II. Following the war, she was employed in the garment industry.

She enjoyed decorating the home, listening to music, ceramics, needlework, and most of all, spending time with her family.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the care and compassion given to their dear Mom.

Preceding her in death are her husband of 64 years, Stephen Paul Polander, who died on Nov. 26, 2011, and her sister, Marion Tasker.

Lelia is survived by her son, Stephen M. Polander, of Berwick; four daughters, Mary, wife of Martin Wesstrom, Wilkes-Barre Township; Ann, wife of Michael Ziemba, Wilkes-Barre; Linda, wife of Terry Zeares, Bloomsburg, and Susan, wife of Glenn Lupole, Hanover Township; eight grandchildren, Richard, Ryan and Robby Lupole; Michael and Theresa Zeares; Wendy Miller; and Martin and Stephanie Wesstrom; eight great-grandchildren, Cameron, Darren, Joshua, Veronica, Christopher and Kaitlyn Lupole, and Erin and Rachelle Horning; and two brothers, Sheldon May and his wife, Margaret, Hazleton, and William May and his wife, Marilyn, Wilkes-Barre.

A visitation will be held on Thursday from noon until the time of services at 1 p.m. at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, with the Rev. Wayne Lupole of Christ Lutheran Church, Hazleton, officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
