City council will hold an organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
On the agenda are the elections of a new chair and vice chair for council. The oath of office will be administered afterward.
Council also will vote on resolutions to establish the 2013 holiday schedule and meeting dates.
Celebrate Three Kings’ Day, or El Dia de los Reyes, at the Catholic Youth Center today. Food, music, dance groups, games for children and a gift for each child are among the offerings at the program held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the center, 36 S. Washington St. The program is open to the public.
The new president of Wilkes University, Patrick Leahy, will be featured in a live presentation of the State of Pennsylvania on WVIA-TV, Channel 44. The show will air at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Leahy is the university’s sixth president. He previously was executive vice president of The University of Scranton. Prior to that, he was co-founder and president of The Business Affairs Forum, a 15,000-member distance learning community based in Ithaca, N.Y. He has worked as an investment officer at Allied Capital Corp., as an account executive at Deluxe Corp., and as a development officer at Georgetown University. Leahy holds a doctor of education degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a dual master’s degree from Cornell University in business administration and labor relations, where he was a Fried Fellow, and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Georgetown University.

A township man faces multiple charges after he allegedly stabbed a neighbor during an argument Thursday night.
Police responded to 6 Company Row at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and found Douglas Smith, 42, bleeding heavily from a stab wound to his right shoulder blade. Smith told police he was outside and engaged in an argument with a Christopher Young when Guy Fox, 47, grabbed a hunting knife and lodged it into Smith’s back, according to court papers.
Smith went into the house because his wife, Tracey Smith, was screaming at him that he was bleeding and he had a knife sticking out of his back. Once inside, Smith pulled the 5.75-inch knife out of his back, police said.
Smith was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. When police went to the hospital to interview him, he was being transported to the operating room because medical personnel couldn’t stop the bleeding in the emergency room, police said.
Fox, of Rear 6 Company Row, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned before District Judge Michael Dotzel, who set his bail at $25,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday before Dotzel.
Secretary of the state Department of Corrections John Wetzel announced that the agency ended 2012 with a population of 51,184 inmates, a decrease of 454 inmates from 2011.
The decline was the largest one-year drop in the state’s prison population since 1971.
