The RailRiders couldn’t overcome a rough start by pitcher Brett Marshall, who fell to 7-10 after allowing five runs through the first five innings. The RailRiders had the potential tying runs on base in both the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn’t cash in while managing just six hits against Pawtucket pitching. Not to worry, maybe Derek Jeter can help generate some offense when the Yankees star makes a second rehab trip to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tonight.
RailRiders at the plate: Ronnier Mustelier was the hitting star, going 3-for-3 while scoring one run and driving home another. Alberto Gonzalez added a single and a sacrifice fly.
RailRiders on the mound: After starter Brett Marshall left following five innings of struggles, the RailRiders bullpen did a solid job. Yoshinori Tateyama was spectacular, retiring all six men he faced and striking out five of them. Former Phillies reliever David Herndon worked the final two innings, struck out two and allowed one unearned run.
Riding the Rails: It’s another Derek Jeter day in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the Yankees iconic shortstop starts a rehab stint tonight with the RailRiders while trying to recover from a strained calf.
Time of Game: 3:04.
Today’s Game: The RailRiders continue their four-game homestand against Pawtucket with rehabbing New York Yankees star Derek Jeter in the lineup in a 7:05 p.m. game at PNC Field.
Today’s Probables: Pawtucket righthander Steven Wright (6-7, 3.89 ERA) goes up against RailRiders righty Graham Stoneburner (3-4, 4.82 ERA).
On Deck: Jeter is expected to spend at least one more night with the RailRiders Friday and may stay through Saturday to finish off the series against Pawtucket.
Today at PNC Field: It’s another “Thirsty Thursday” which means fans can pick up a small drink for a dollar.
On the Radio: All games can be heard on WYCK 1340-AM, 1400-AM and 100.7-FM.
HOW THEY SCORED
PAWTUCKET SECOND: Mark Hamilton laced a double to left field and Drew Sutton drew a walk. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored when Jeremy Hazelbaker dunked a double inside the left field line. PAWTUCKET 2-0.
RAILRIDERS SECOND: Dan Johnson walked and advanced to third base on Ronnier Mustelier’s one-out double to right field. J.R. Murphy grounded out as Johnson scored. PAWTUCKET 2-1.
PAWTUCKET THIRD: Brock Holt doubled, advanced to third base when Ryan Lavarnway singled and rode home on Hamilton’s sacrifice fly to left field. PAWTUCKET 3-1.
PAWTUCKET FIFTH: Jackie Bradley, Holt and Lavarnway all singled to start the inning and fill the bases. Bradley scored when Hamilton grounded into a fielder’s choice and Dan Butler delivered Holt with a sacrifice fly to center field. PAWTUCKET 5-1.
RAILRIDERS FIFTH: Mustelier and Murphy began the inning with consecutive singles. Mustelier moved to third base when Adonis Garcia flied out to right field, then raced home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Alberto Gonzalez. PAWTUCKET 5-2.
RAILRIDERS SIXTH: Melky Mesa walked, then stole second and third base. He scored when Mustelier beat out a single to shortstop as first baseman Sutton’s glove flew off while he was trying to make a swipe at the bouncing throw. PAWTUCKET 5-3.
PAWTUCKET NINTH: Hazelbaker reached base on an infield hit that should have moved teammate Jonathan Diaz to third base – but Diaz was tagged out when he fell off the bag. No matter. Hazlebaker later scored when Bradley reached on a two-out error. PAWTUCKET 6-3.
