BERWICK – As a nod to senior night, the Berwick Bulldogs shook up their starting lineup.
It helped cause an eruption of points that buried the upset hopes of Tunkhannock.
Seniors Caty Davenport and Kelly Sheptock started Thursday off right for the Bulldogs, who used a deep and balanced offensive explosion to tag Tunkhannock 62-28 at the Berwick Middle School gym.
Sixty-two points is a lot for us, whistled Berwick coach Bill Phillips.
It all started with a lineup shift that sent senior Margaret Bridge, normally a reserve, onto the court as a starter. And while she contributed more with rebounds and assists than with points, her teammates had little difficulty providing the offensive punch.
Davenport, Sheptock and freshman center Taylor Montana all scored six points in the opening quarter as Berwick dashed to a quick 22-8 lead.
It was senior night, we started a different lineup for the seniors, Phillips said.
Gabby Kishbaugh’s three-point goal built Berwick’s lead to 19 points early in the second quarter. But Tunkhannock rallied behind five points from Maegan Wrubel and pulled within 27-18 on two free throws from Molly Hampsey with just under two minutes remaining in the first half.
We kind of lost focus, I think, said Phillips, whose team moved to 3-6 in Wyoming Valley Conference Division I play but suffered tough losses against divisional frontrunners Pittston Area, Wyoming Valley West and Crestwood. We haven’t been up big this year.
The Bulldogs quickly regained their concentration in the second half, building their lead to 42-24 by the end of the third quarter on the strength of a defense that allowed just four baskets and 10 points over the final 16 minutes.

Northwest overcame a slow start to defeat Wyoming Seminary.
Alivia Womelsdorf led all scorers with 20 points, eight of them coming in the second quarter when the Rangers bounced back to take the lead. Kelsey Yustat added nine points for the winners.

Hanover Area utilized a 16-9 run in the third quarter and kept the Mohawks at bay in the fourth in a win.
Asdone Hooper scored 16 points to lead the Hawkeyes, Haylee Bobos chipped in with 13 of her own.
Salimah Biggs led the Mohawks with 16 points. Tiffany Muniz and Mackenzie Winder each scored 10.

Adam Dizbon’s 18 points paced the Black Knights, while Pete Borum notched 16 points and 13 rebounds.
