Ringing the Victory Bell is more of a football thing. But the Wyoming Area girls lacrosse team decided it was time for them to give it a shot.

Following the team’s first win in school history – a 7-6 decision of Tunkhannock on Tuesday, April 14 – the team made its way to Anthony “Jake” Sobeski Stadium to to ring the bell.

The first win in school history was made possible by Jordan Kelly. Kelly had five goals and Claudia Waltz contributed two goals. Kelly provided the winning goal in overtime.

“We set some goals at the beginning of the season and that was one of them,” Wyoming Area coach Carl Deluca said. “We told the girls we weren’t going to worry about the scoreboard this season but one of our goals was to get that first win.”

Goalie Emily Cheskiewicz saved 10 out of 16 shots, and stepped up her game in overtime.

Both the boys and the girls teams of Wyoming Area are in their inaugural seasons as a community-funded sport. All money is fundraised to support them.

“The girls are hungry,” Deluca said. “They want to learn the game. Our goal for the rest of the season is to keep competing and learn to the very end. They are pushing to get another win.”

Pittston Area 12, Scranton Prep 11

The Patriots picked up their first win of the girls lacrosse season with a 12-11, overtime win over Scranton Prep on Thursday.

Lucia Menichelli-Bates scored the team’s winner just 24 seconds into the overtime period. Pittston Area’s Haley Norwillo scored seven goals, while teammate Abigail Rodriguez added two. Nicole Walters made 16 saves for the Patriots.

“It was a weight that was lifted off our shoulders,” Pittston Area coach Leigha Dolcemascolo said. “We were finally able to mesh and control the ball in the mid field.”

Menichelli-Bates’ shot in overtime came after she was fouled near the Cavaliers’ net. Menichelli-Bates’ was awarded a 5-meter shot. According to Dolcemascolo, the shot was perfect.

Coughlin 19, Pittston 4

Brigid Wood scored seven goals and had one assist in the Crusaders’ win Monday.

Teammate Hailee Dumont chipped in with three goals and two assists, while Savanna Robinson added three goals and one assist. Kristi Pearage and Alex Smith each had two goals and one assist in the win. M’Kensie Lee made four saves in goal.

Haley Norwillo led Pittston with three goals. Anna McDermott scored a goal, while Nicole Walters finished with 25 saves.

Lake-Lehman 19, Wyoming Area 0

Emily Cheskiewicz made 13 saves for Wyoming Area in a loss to Lake-Lehman on Monday. Ten different Black Knight players scored in the win.

Delaware Valley 20, Wyoming Area 9

Claudia Waltz and Jordan Kelly each scored four goals in Wyoming Area’s loss to Delaware Valley in a Wyoming Valley Conference crossover match on Wednesday. The Warriors also got a goal from Lindsey Pozaic.

Ali Haydu tied the school record for goals in a game with eight to lift Delaware Valley.

Wyoming Seminary 18, Wyoming Area 3

The Warriors got all three goals from junior Jordan Kelly in a loss to the Blue Knights on Friday.

Delaware Valley 20, Pittston Area 7

Haley Norwillo scored six goals Friday but Pittston Area fell to Delaware Valley, 20-7.

Nicole Walters made 16 saves in the loss.

BOYS LACROSSE

Tunkhannock 10, Wyoming Area 4

Matt Dymond scored five goals and recorded one assist in the Tigers’ win on Tuesday.

Teammate Zack Greenip finished with three goals and one assist, while Sean Andres chipped in with two goals and two assists. Kurtis Carichner made seven saves in the win.

Wyoming Area’s Jake Urban and Sammy Greenfield finished with two goals and one assist.

North Pocono 10, Wyoming Area 9

The Warriors fell to North Pocono, 10-9, on Thursday.
