When you think of autumn, what are the first images that come to mind? I automatically think of the beautiful changing leaves, cool nights and pumpkins. I also think about Tunkhannock’s Airing of the Quilts and the Dietrich’s Fall Film Festival. This weekend, we will have the opportunity to celebrate both at the same time.

Visitors can experience Tunkhannock at its finest — beautifully decked out in colorful and vibrant quilts – on Saturday, Oct. 4.

The town will be buzzing with activity that day. At the theater, we invite the community to join us for a presentation with Kathy Hall, Director of Design for Andover Fabrics and Curator of the Downton Abbey Fabric Collection. I am a big fan of “Downton Abbey” and a quilter, as well, so I can’t wait for this talk. Hall will share how they designed the “Downton” fabric collection. For research, she went to the set at High Tower Castle and visited with the costume designers.

Fascinating, right? It should be an interesting story.

Hall will also give us a sneak peek of the next Downton Abbey Collection due out in November. Tickets are $7 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500. Space is limited so we recommend making reservations now.

In conjunction with the quilt lecture, we will also host a “Downton Abbey” trunk show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday in our Fassett Studio. Admission is free.

The Dietrich will have three gorgeous quilts to raffle off that day. Local quilter Laurie Mace made these stunning quilts and donated them to the Dietrich to help raise funds to support cultural programming at the theater. What a generous gift! I can’t imagine the time and effort she put into making those beauties.

In addition to the quilt raffle chances available for purchase, the Dietrich Fundraising Committee will sell whimsically-painted pumpkins, delicious baked goods and scarecrows. So please stop by and support a good cause.

During your day in Tunkhannock, we also invite you to experience some of our festival films. They are so good this year. This weekend I hope to see “Alive Inside” and “Boyhood.” What films are on your list? Remember, we have a third week to enjoy festival, and it will continue through Oct. 9.

Then, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, classical guitarist Jay Steveskey will take us on a journey to experience the music of Venezuela. He will share compositions by guitarist and Venezuelan composer Antonio Lauro. We will also hear the original music of Emilio Sojo, Rodrigo Riera and Alirio Diaz. This concert is sponsored by John P. Keker in memory of Jessie Reppy Keker and admission is free. A light reception will follow. Tickets can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500 and will be available at the door while they last.

As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
