WILKES-BARRE — An alleged sardine thief apparently waited too long to make her move and was caught in the act.

City police say an astute store manager at Schiel’s Family Market, 30 Hanover St., observed a woman, later identified as Kimberly Royce, loitering in aisle No. 2 for a long time Thursday afternoon.

The manager then saw Royce allegedly place 28 packages of sardines in her purse and attempt to flee the business, police said.

Store personnel were able to stop Royce from leaving and escorted her to the store’s Loss Prevention Office, police said.

Royce was then taken into custody and transported to Wilkes-Barre Police Headquarters where she was cited with retail theft, processed and released.
