Editor’s note: With all sports about to make their way into district playoffs, the Sunday Dispatch archives show that area teams were beginning to flourish down the stretch. Whether it was wrestling or swimming, even basketball, both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area enjoyed success through the decades.

February 2004

Pittston Area sent seven wrestlers to the semifinals and trailed team-wise to Abington Heights by just 19.5 points after the opening day of the PIAA District 2 Wrestling Championships.

Steve Barber (145) was one semifinalist, and also recorded his 100th career win. Also in the semis were: Kyle Emerick (135), Phil Dunn (140), Jeff Dunn (152), Dave Woodall (160), Andy Depew (171) and John Laboranti (215).

February 1994

The Seton Catholic girls basketball team held off a fourth-quarter charge from GAR to come away with a 46-42 win.

Erin Brennan had 14 points, while Kiera Feeney had 13. Nine of Feeney’s points came on three shots from downtown. Tanya Pavlick and Melissa Reynolds each had six points for Seton.

The Lady Eagles locked up an unbeaten second half in WVC Division 3 play.

February 1984

Wyoming Area successfully defended its District 2 swimming title at King’s College.

The Warriors piled up 191 team points en route to the title, which came one week after the team copped its second straight conference championship. The Warriors were virtually untested for first place. Pittston Area came in 11th.

District medalists were Nadine Pribula (two golds and a silver), Karen Winsock (one gold, two silvers), Deanna Cassetori three golds), Debbie Pribula (bronze) and Janie Failko (one gold, one bronze).

February 1974

Pittston Area’s boys basketball team improved to 3-2 in the second half with a 55-53 win over Wyoming Area in a thriller.

Pittston Area’s Kevin Connors scored a game-high 27 points. Jim Castellino scored 11 points, while Bernie Nitowski chipped in nine. For the Warriors, Paul Gillespie hit for 24 points, while Mike Supeczynski collected 14.

The win marked the first time the Patriots had beaten the Warriors with coach Simon Bernosky at the helm.
