Nicholas DeFebo set a Marywood University record by striking out 17 batters in a 12-2 win over visiting Philadelphia Biblical University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball opener for each team.

Sam Webster set the record of 16 in 2009.

Abington Heights graduate Anthony Castellano hit a homer for Marywood (1-0 in the CSAC and 6-5 overall).

Philadelphia Biblical is winless.

DeFebo, who had a no-hitter going into the seventh, gave up two runs on five hits.

SOFTBALL

Marywood won a pair of one-run games from Cedar Crest to open CSAC play.

The Pacers won, 6-5, in 10 innings then, 2-1.

Kaitlyn Jones, a junior from North Pocono, pitched 10 innings in the opener.

Mid Valley graduate Mariah Runco and West Scranton graduate Ashley Dommes each went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader.
