The Scranton Prep girls claimed four medals Friday and settled into third-place in the team standings at the midway point of the Class AA portion of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Classics finished the first day of Class AA competition with 98 points. Villa Maria Academy has a 125-118 lead on Central Columbia going into today’s action.

The three contenders went at it from the first event.

Central Columbia set a state record of 1:46.98 in the opening 200-yard medley relay. Scranton Prep was second and Villa Maria third.

Mia Nonnenberg, Rebekah Campo, Katie Voitik and Maria Telincho finished second for the Classics in 1:48.45.

The same combination took fourth place in the day’s final event, the 200 freestyle relay, with a time of 1:39.62.

Four individual events were contested between the relays and Scranton Prep managed second-place finishes in two of those events.

Campo was second in the 100 butterfly to a state-record performance by Margaret Gruber of Mars. Gruber finished in 53.50 seconds. Campo’s time was 55.97.

Nonnenberg took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.11 after qualifying second with a time of 2:05.97.

Marie Georger of Mercyhurst Prep won it 2:01.30.

Voitik finished last in the field of 32 in the 200 freestyle qualifying, which was conducted right after the opening relay.

Scranton Prep’s Ryan Castellani reached the consolation final and finished 12th in the Class AA boys’ 100 butterfly.

The Scranton Prep medley relay team was disqualified.
