John E. Joivell, 88, of Pittston, died Thursday morning, December 13, 2007, at Highland Manor, Exeter.
Born in Pittston, on June 10, 1919, he was a son of the late Ernest and Alice (Kysilia) Joivell.
He attended Pittston schools, and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the following medals: Bronze Star; Good Conduct, Presidential Unit Emblem, American Defense, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, World War II Victory, Army of Occupation, Combat Infantry, and Honorable Service Lapel Button.
Prior to retirement in 1972, he was a coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Virginia N. Kiselevach; son Timothy; sister Rosella Gratzo.
He is survived by two sons, John J. Joivell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Calvin, Pa., and Hilary and his wife, Karen, of Harveys Lake; four daughters, Virginia Bressler, of Taylor, Mary Burkhart and her husband, Rick, of LaPlume, Elaine Bellanca and her husband, Louis, of Kingston Township, and Diane Uranowski and her husband, Ed, of Mountain Top; three grandchildren, Neil Bellanca, Kristin and Jessica Joivell; one great-grandchild, Abigail Pye-Joivell; sister Mary Perschau, of Jenkins Township; nieces and nephews.
Funeral was held Dec. 15 from the Kizis-Lokuta Funeral Home, 134 Church St., Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John the Evangelist Church, William Street, Pittston. Interment, Pittston Cemetery.
