FORTY FORT — The swearing in of the borough’s new mayor, Andy Tuzinski, and incoming councilmembers Deborah Troy and Jeff McLaughlin kicked off council’s reorganization meeting and subsequent regular meeting Monday.
Council appointed Jeff McLaughlin as council president and Robert Craig as vice president. The two meetings, including an executive session that followed, lasted nearly four hours.
Council voted 3-1 to appoint Jack Haley as the borough’s new solicitor. Council members Frank Michaels, Troy and McLaughlin abstained. Rick Kamus voted no.
Michaels said he wasn’t aware that previous solicitor Sam Falcone was to be replaced and asked Craig why he and the rest of council wasn’t in on the decision.
“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Michaels said. “All council should have been in on it.”
Craig said he and McLaughlin discussed the issue between themselves and interviewed several people before deciding on Haley. Tuzinski added that Haley has a diverse background which includes experience as a police officer, firefighter, paramedic and is knowledgeable of zoning and code enforcement law.
Haley is the current solicitor for Larksville and was also appointed on Monday as Lehman Township’s solicitor.
Tuzinski described Falcone as a “dedicated professional” and a “personal friend,” but said it was time for a change. Council voted unanimously to retain Falcone to manage the borough’s tax anticipation note.
The following appointments were also made: Barbara Fairchild as borough manager, Bonnie Arnone as assistant secretary, Jack Gill as zoning solicitor, Alan Brezinski as building inspector/code enforcement officer and James Shedlarski as fire chief.
After an executive session to discuss personnel matters, council:
· Voted to resolve a pending grievance filed by firefighter Robert Pugh.
· Authorized the president of council and solicitor to resolve a memorandum of understanding relating to a grievance between the borough and the Fraternal Order of Police.
· Motioned the borough manager to work with the solicitor to develop disciplinary policies for borough employees.
· Voted to hold a special meeting on Jan. 21 at 7:25 p.m. (just before the work session) for the purpose of voting on a land development application for a subdivision at 72 W. Pettebone St.
