NANTICOKE — Coleen Borum went 2-for-3 with a double and picked up the save as Crestwood snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-5 win over Nanticoke in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 softball Friday.
Alyssa Davies picked up the win for the Comets (4-9), who had their best offensive output of the season.
Kelsey Rinehamer went 2-for-4 as the Trojanettes (7-6) lost their fourth straight.
Berwick 7, Wyoming Area 1
Courtney Hummel had three hits and Cassondra Dianese knocked in two runs as Berwick (9-3 Div. 2) moved back into first place in the division. The Dawgs jumped on Wyoming Area (7-5 Div. 2) by scoring five times in the first inning.
Abbey Remley and Moriah Lynn added two hits each. Lynn was also the winning pitcher.
Holy Redeemer 18, Wyo. Seminary 0
The Royals (9-0 Div. 3) moved closer to the division title with a victory in three innings. They scored 14 runs in the first inning.
Victoria Steinetz, Kaya Swanek and Kristen Coffay all drove in three runs for Redeemer.
Wilkes moves to second round
Wilkes jumped to 3-0 lead in doubles play en route to a 5-0 win over Bridgewater State in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament.
Amanda Rossi and Madison Salmon won their singles matches. Ally Kristofco and Ana English teamed up to win in doubles.
The Colonels (19-2) advance to Saturday’s second round where they will play Bowdoin at 11 a.m.
King’s names captains
King’s head football coach Jeff Knarr announced the selection of Tyler Hartranft, Nick Kaijala, Dan Kempa, Kris Matthews Seymour and Peter Santorelli as the Monarchs’ 2014 team captains.
All five players will be entering their senior campaigns this season and played a major part of the Monarchs improving from 3-7 overall and 2-7 in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 2012 to 6-4 and 6-3 in 2013. Kempa was a standout locally at Susquehanna High School.
The Monarchs will open their season Sept. 7 in Bethlehem against host Moravian College.
Misericordia hosting ECAC Championships
Misericordia will host the 2014 ECAC South Division III Softball Championships today and Sunday at Anderson Field.
The Cougars (24-15) are the top seed in the double-elimination event and will face Arcadia in Saturday’s opener at 10 a.m.
