WILKES-BARRE — Denny’s remains closed as renovations to the city restaurant continue.

The 24-hour eatery closed its doors at 3 p.m. on July 26 for a “restaurant cleaning, maintenance and repairs,” according to a message posted on its front door.

The closure was estimated to be for “approximately eight days,” the note stated.

However, nine days later the parking lot entrance from Kidder Street is blocked by yellow road cones and the Scott Street entrance allows room for construction crews. The parking lot has dumpsters for debris and concrete sidewalk slabs are removed from the front and side of the building. A large kitchen exhaust fan rests in a grassy area on the side of the building.

Rachel Adams, spokesperson for Denny’s public relations firm, said Tuesday the Wilkes-Barre location is part of a nationwide “campaign to remodel its restaurants.”

Adams did not have a scheduled reopening date for the restaurant.

The Wilkes-Barre Denny’s first opened January 1973. The next closest Denny’s restaurants are in Scranton and Hazleton.
