PITTSTON TWP. — For the second straight month, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport has set an all-time record for passenger travel.

At the June meeting of the airport board, Executive Director Carl Beardsley Jr. reported that May was the best month in history for passenger travel — 24,088 to be exact — a 17.5 percent increase over May 2016.

At Thursday’s meeting, Beardsley reported that June saw 290 more passengers travel through the airport — setting a new record of 24,378 — the highest one-month total in the airport’s 70-year history.

Beardsley said additional flights to Charlotte by American Airlines and Allegiant Airlines’ twice-weekly flights to Tampa/St. Petersburg are the main reasons for the significant increase. He said travelers now have more choices, and fares have been very competitive.
