Ready for a few laughs?

Join us this weekend for the Dietrich’s community theatre production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring. During this timeless black comedy we will meet a couple of charming and innocent ladies who populate their cellar with the remains of socially and religiously “acceptable” roomers, experience the antics of their brother, who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt, and witness the activities of the other brother.

Written in 1939, this popular play originally opened in January 1941 and ran through June 1944 with over 1,444 performances. It was made famous by Frank Capra’s film adaptation of the story, starring Cary Grant, and now you have an opportunity to see it come to life on the Dietrich stage. Directed by the Dietrich’s own Hoyt Keiser, the cast and crew have been tirelessly putting the finishing touches on the production.

Curtains go up on “Arsenic and Old Lace” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29 at the Dietrich, and the three-day run of this show will continue at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 30 and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1 for a matinee performance. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500 or at the door. Come support community theatre in our region.

We would like to thank the cast and crew of Keiser, Roxana Cameron, Millie Ryczak, Mary Troy, Esther Harmatz, Brenda Fager, Jim Jenkins, Sarah Landstrom, Luke Sayre, Owen Frazier, Justin O’Hearn, Shadden Brock, Meredith Miner-Reese, Cecilia Sayre, Eric Lutz, Bryan Baylee, Rich Ryczak, David Swanson and Jerry Beaucheane Sr. for their dedication, passion, and all the work they have put into making this show possible.

We invite children and families to join us for a free showing of the popular animated movie “How to Train Your Dragon” at 11 a.m. next Saturday, May 7. It should be a morning of laughter and fun, and the best part is not only is admission free, but so is the popcorn and soda for this film. You can’t beat that for a day out with the family!

We would like to thank the Kintner family for underwriting this special event in memory of “Jeeterbug.” For reservations, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500. Tickets will also be available at the door while they last.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 8, the theater will kick off a new season of National Theatre Live on Screen at the Dietrich with Shakespeare’s glorious comedy “As You Like It.”

This play tells the story of Rosalind, played by Rosalie Craig, and her father the Duke, who are banished into exile. Rosalind and her cousin Celia leave their lives in the royal court behind and venture into the Forest of Arden. There, liberated from convention, Rosalie disguises herself as a boy and experiences a new way of life and adventure and falls in love.

I once saw this play performed live at Misercordia University when I was a teenager and can’t wait to see it again now.

General admission is $14. Member and senior tickets are $12. Child and student admission is $10. Tickets are available by calling the theater or at the door.

As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
