LA PLUME — The Lackawanna Astronomical Society will celebrate International Astronomy Day 2016 by hosting an open house at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Keystone College’s Thomas G. Cupillari Observatory in Fleetville. The event, which is free and open to the public with no registration required, includes observatory and telescope tours, an astronomy program, star maps and star wheels.
Observing is an outdoor activity, so participants should dress according to the weather. If it is clear enough, early observing will be possible of the sun, moon, and Jupiter and it’s huge Galilean moons. Later, Mars and Saturn will be up high enough to see well. Stars, star clusters and galaxies will be best seen once the moon is low.
The observatory is located at the intersection of Route 107 and Hack Road. To get to the observatory from I-81, take Exit 202 and turn left heading for Fleetville, at about 1.8 miles from I-81, turn left onto Hack Road.
