SCRANTON — The third annual Bike Safety Fair and Helmet Giveaway, presented by the Lackawanna County Commissioners, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at PNC Field, Montage Mountain Road, Moosic.

Three hundred helmets will be given away free-of-charge to the youngsters who attend. Bike safety talks will be presented by the Scranton Police Department. A bike rodeo is also planned to help participants learn how to navigate in all kinds of weather and terrain.

PNC Bank is the presenting sponsor. Other sponsoring firms are Cedar Bike and Paddle, Gerrity’s Supermarkets, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders and Legends Hospitality Management.

The county is coordinating a helmet design competition. Although the design contest deadline is past to enter to win a bike, a second drawing for another bike will be conducted the day of the fair.

In order to receive a helmet at the fair, youngsters will be required to attend a brief bike safety talk. When the presentation is complete, the children will be given a hand stamp to pick up their helmet.

The Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority will supervise the bike rodeo and safety checks. Several activities, child finger printing by the district attorney’s office and giveaways are planned. The Scranton Public Library’s Bookmobile will also be on site. Kato, the sheriff department’s bomb detection canine, will be on hand for various demonstrations.

Hot dogs will be served, compliments of Gerrity’s Supermarkets.
