DALTON — Council president Gus Vlassis said the borough received communication from Dalton’s sister city, Dalton-in-Furness, which is in Cumbria, England at the council meeting May 14.

He read a letter from Allison Roberts, a teacher from George Romney Junior School, which is located in Dalton-in-Furness. He read that the Roberts is planning a geography project for its summer term.

“We plan to study our small town of Dalton, and compare it with your Dalton,” Vlassis read from Roberts’ letter. “I am writing to ask if you would like to be part of a children’s learning, either via email, sharing photos or link with your local schools, or any other ideas you may have.”

Vlassis asked board member Lorraine Daniels, because of her knowledge about Dalton, and board member Kyle Brown, because of his computer skills, to send photos of Dalton and also communicate with Roberts by email. Daniels and Brown agreed to it.

Also in his president’s report, Vlassis mentioned that he received a letter from state Rep. Karen Boback. He said that she is offering satellite office hours at municipal and borough buildings throughout the district.

“What she (Boback) suggests is that once a month on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, a staff member would be available for two hours whenever the borough secretary would be in the office,” said Vlassis. “The day would be consistent each month and will be listed in the newspapers, and included in Representative Boback’s email blast.”

Vlassis also said that some of the things provided will be assistance with property taxes, rental rebate applications, PennDOT driver’s license renewals, and birth and death certificates.

“I don’t see why we can’t have her come in here or someone from her office come here,” he stated. “It would be great for the community, great for the people, great for the council.”

Daniels said, “I think it would be wonderful if she came here.”
