WILKES-BARRE — A driver asleep at the wheel was charged with DUI after a police officer woke him up and his vehicle rolled into a police cruiser.

Police on patrol encountered a vehicle with three occupants at the intersection of Park Avenue and South Street just after 2 a.m. Sunday and found the driver asleep at the wheel, police said.

Upon waking the driver, identified as David Regaldo Jr., 20, of 220 Dana St., Wilkes-Barre, Regaldo allegedly let his vehicle roll into the officer’s marked police cruiser, but no damage was caused.

Regaldo was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and transported to police headquarters for a breath test, for which police said he tested positive for DUI.

The other vehicle occupants, Leonardo Cardena, 40, of 216 Dana St., Wilkes-Barre, and Santiago G. Gonzalez, 35, of 94 Dana St., Wilkes-Barre, were unable to obtain transportation, and officers found their resident status “questionable,” police said.

Cardena and Gonzalez also were transported to police headquarters and held pending investigation of their resident status. Citations for public drunkenness were issued upon their release following their clearance with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, police said.
