The eight Wyoming Valley Conference state qualifiers saw their brackets for the first time on Sunday morning when they were released by the PIAA.

Each grappler will have a tough bracket because, well there are no easy matches when you get to this stage of the season.

GAR’s A.J. Luton, the school’s first state qualifier since 2004, will get things started for the conference Thursday morning at 9 in the Class 2A championships. The 113-pound junior will be the first from the WVC to wrestle in the tournament when he takes his 29-6 record against Derry Area freshman George Phillippi (38-4) in the preliminary round.

The rest of the 2A competitors will also be early in the morning in the lighter weights. Wyoming Area’s Andy Schutz (126 pounds, 25-3) faces Bethlehem Catholic’s Zeke Moisey (23-2) in the first round. He will be followed by Lake-Lehman’s unbeaten 132-pounder Austin Harry (37-0) facing Tri Valley’s Chase Schaeffer (33-10).

Schutz’ teammate at 138, Nick Heck (32-2), will close out the 2A session in the morning for the WVC when he takes the mat to face Sharon’s Michael Bonner (33-3) in the first round.

The Class 3A preliminaries get underway at 4 p.m. at Giant Center in Hershey with senior Kyle Krasavage, Wyoming Valley West’s unbeaten at 38-0 at 126 pounds, wrestling in his first match at states since his freshman season. He will take on Clearfield senior Dylan Graham (32-5).

His teammate, Travis Roper (31-8), at 132 faces Central Buck East’s Francesco Fabozzi (36-2) in the preliminaries. Up next for the conference will be Crestwood’s Matt Hammerstone (32-6) at 145 when he faces Norristown’s Mikey Springer, who enters with a mark of 35-3.

Coughlin’s Brad Emerick (36-1) closes out the day of wrestling for the conference at 285 when he starts his second straight state tournament appearance with a preliminary round match against Cary Hess (30-4) from Shippensburg.
