WILKES-BARRE — Mike Leonard, E.J. Wesnesky and Dustin Mattern recorded one goal apiece to lead Wyoming Valley West to a 3-0 victory over Crestwood on Sunday to claim the championship of the local high school hockey league at Coal Street.
Damien Farrell secured the shutout with 37 saves in goal for Valley West.
King’s 16, Emerson 5
Chris Sweeney hit for the cycle as the King’s smacked 18 hits and took advantage of six Emerson errors en route to a win at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
Sweeney paced the Monarch offense going 5-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI. Jason Mikus finished the game 3-for-6 driving in three and scoring two runs.
Cougars duo honored
Misericordia standouts Steve Sulcoski and Evan Robaczewski have been recognized as the week’s best in the Freedom Conference.
Sulcoski, a senior catcher, was named Player of the Week while Robaczewski was named Pitcher of the Week.
Sulcoski hit .474 (9-16) with two doubles, a homer and 10 RBI to help the team to a 6-1 start this season. He has hit safely in six of seven games.
Robaczewski, a senior, is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA, including a season-opening win at nationally-ranked Shenandoah.
King’s wins twice
The Lady Monarchs won a pair at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. downing Penn State Hazleton 8-0 in five innings before posting an 8-0 win over Ursinus College in six.
In the opener, Jenn Harnischfeger led the way going 3-for-3 with two runs, a double, and a RBI. Amanda Cardone was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while scoring two runs.
Allison Herbert picked up the pitching win, allowing just two hits and striking out two batters in five innings of work.
Against Ursinus, Cardone was 2-for-3 with a RBI double, Katie Kowalski was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Rachel Linso was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits in three full innings.
The Cougars evened their record with a pair of wins at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., beating Emerson, 11-2 and Adrian, 6-2.
In the opener, Kristi Seiler had four hits and drove in two runs and Kat LaBrie added three hits.
Jess Armillay scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Wilkes 9, Assumption 0
The Colonels downed Assumption on the first day of their spring break trip at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Wilkes swept all three doubles matches before claiming wins in six straight singles flights. Ally Kristofco, Katie Lynn, Ana English, Amanda Rossi, Olivia Hewison and Summer Lentini all earned straight-set singles wins for the Lady Colonels.
