WILKES-BARRE — The city will form a five-member sewer authority, believed to be the first in Wilkes-Barre’s recent history, Mayor Tom Leighton said Thursday.

A resolution authorizing the board’s formation will appear on city council’s voting agenda during Tuesday’s work session.

At its crux, Leighton said water runoff flowing through the city puts a burden on the city’s sanitary system.

“This will allow us to tag a fee onto that,” Leighton said of instituting a service fee. “Something we probably should have did awhile ago.”

Leighton said more information on the proposed sewer board will be available early next week.

Council’s work session, closed to public comment, will occur Tuesday at 6 p.m. in council chambers on the fourth floor of City Hall.
