FOSTER TWP. — A Freeland man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday evening.

State police at Hazleton said Noel Lyttle, 31, was driving a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle east on state Route 940 at a high rate of speed as he was approaching the intersection with North Lehigh Gorge Drive when, at the same time, Stephen Pompella, 68, of White Haven, was turning left in his 2014 Ford Escape from Route 940 onto North Lehigh Gorge Drive.

Lyttle’s motorcycle struck the passenger side of Pompella’s SUV, and Lyttle was thrown about 50 feet east after the impact and came to rest on Route 940. The motorcycle traveled about 42 feet in a northerly direction and came to rest on the shoulder of Route 940, police said.

The SUV continued about 60 feet onto North Lehigh Gorge Drive before coming to rest.

Lyttle, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The occupants of the SUV were not injured.

White Haven Fire and Ambulance and Fearnots Fire companies assisted on scene.
