DUPONT — Mayor Dan Lello on Thursday confirmed that borough police Chief Sean Murray has been suspended without pay.

The suspension is an apparent result of a July 20 temporary Protection From Abuse order that required him to turn over any firearms in his possession to the Lackawanna County Sheriff.

Julie Kelly, a Scranton woman who had a previous intimate relationship with Murray, filed a PFA petition alleging that over the last few weeks, Murray had been leaving gifts, toiletries and flowers at her house, all while sending and making “hundreds” of text messages and phone calls to her relatives.

She alleged that Murray showed up at her residence on July 10, “begging” for five minutes to speak with her; that two years ago, he grabbed her by the hair and slapped her; and three months later, grabbed her by the hair and “cut it all off.”

Murray also filed a PFA petition against Kelly, alleging she damaged his vehicle with a hammer, punched him in the face on numerous occasions, burned his face and chest by throwing hot sauce at him and threatened to shoot him on numerous occasions. A judge granted a temporary PFA order against Kelly, but Murray recently withdrew the petition.

Lello said Murray’s fate with the department will be determined based on the outcome of a hearing scheduled Friday in Lackawanna County Court to decide if the PFA should be made permanent. He declined further comment.
