WILKES-BARRE — The Luzerne County District Attorney Friday cleared Wilkes-Barre mayoral candidate Tony George in the campaign finance reporting case referred to her by the county Bureau of Elections.

District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said her office conducted multiple interviews, including George, a city councilman and former police chief, regarding discrepancies in his reports.

George, a Democrat, said he had made mistakes and hired an accounting firm to review the documents and file amended reports.

“As a result thereof, it is clear that Mr. George did not have any criminal intent to disguise contributions or expenditures in his campaign reporting,” Salavantis said in a statement released Friday afternoon.

“Based on the foregoing, the errors in the instant filings are not criminal in nature and, as a result, criminal charges in this matter will not be forthcoming.”
