WEST PITTSTON — Borough council members elected Pete Musinski as their new vice president at Tuesday’s meeting.

Musinski was voted to the position with a 5-1-1 vote with council president Brian Thornton voting no and Musinski abstaining. His election comes after the resignation of former council president Jim Rose in September and Thornton, who was vice president at the time, moving up to council president.

Jay Rose was sworn into council at a special meeting held Sept. 22 to fill the seat left vacant by his father’s resignation.

It was announced the borough has been awarded at $500,000 Local Share Account (LSA) Grant to address stormwater and sewer improvements on Erie Street, South Street and Fourth Street.

Borough Manager Savino Bonita said the grant is a multi-municipality grant the borough applied for with Exeter and Wyoming. The agreement was West Pittston would be awarded the grant.

He also said borough officials will apply for the same grant for the next two years and it will be awarded to either Exeter or Wyoming, respectively.

In other business, borough council members:

• Approved ratification of workers compensation coverage with the State Workers Insurance Fund for volunteer firefighters for the time period of Sept. 30, 2015 to Sept. 30, 2016.

• Approved the payment of $2,475 to Ashburn Advisors for the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Infrastructure Project to fix flood-damaged streets and sidewalks. Bonita said improvements are currently being made to Susquehanna Avenue, Montgomery Avenue, Excelsior Street and Race Street and will be completed by the end of the month and more streets will be repaired in the near future.

• Approved Kyle J. Calvey as a part-time police officer at an hourly rate of $11.30.

• Approved the hiring of Christopher Reading as full-time Department of Public Works foreman at a salary of $34,070.40 with benefits.
