AVOCA — Council members approved a motion to enter into the Luzerne County Notification System at their monthly meeting.
The Luzerne County Notification System alerts all members of the borough, and those in the surrounding communities, of emergency situations such as fires, flooding or street blockings through a notification on their home phones, cell phones or emails.
Council President John Boone said all home phones within Avoca Borough will automatically be enlisted through the system, but those wishing to get notifications on their smartphones must download the Swift 911 application.
Two apps will be available, said Boone, a red and a blue, and that residents will want to pick the blue app as it’s the public app.
The red app he said is for the apps administrators, so members of the public will not be able to use it.
Boone also provided a quick update on the progress of the new municipal building, saying that he received word from Spotts Bros., the company constructing the building.
Construction was supposed to begin last October and conclude May 8, but other projects and the current weather has delayed progress. Boone said Spotts Bros. will begin construction on March 7 and conclude by May 20.
In other business, council members:
• Approved a resolution to enter into a contract agreement with PPL to convert all of the borough’s 190 street lights into LED lights for $174.
• Voted to plant three trees in West Avoca and Third Ward parks. The borough’s recreation board will decide which park will get how many trees.
• Voted to donate $75 to sponsor the Avoca Basketball League.
• Voted to donate $50 to sponsor the Avoca/Dupont Little League Baseball team.
• Voted to donate $100 to help sponsor the Easter Egg Hunt 5k community event being put on by Langcliffe Presbyterian Church on March 12.
The next council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 10 at the municipal building.
