DURYEA — Council members approved the hiring of three part-time laborers for the street department at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
Robert Walling and Joseph Pisanchayn will fill two positions, while Don Philips will serve as a fill-in should either of the two others are unable to work.
Barbara Shock, mother of Walling, spoke to council members at the beginning of the meeting telling them that he once worked for the borough street department for 10 years before leaving for another job.
She said his job did not work out and asked council members to consider re-hiring him.
Shock thanked council at the meeting’s conclusion, especially because her request came on short notice.
“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you for considering my son tonight, and I really appreciate the fact that you all voted that he would be re-hired tonight,” she said. “It’s really special, today especially, because it was 26 years ago my husband was buried, Robby’s father. So it’s going to be very special when I go home to call him and tell him that you voted yes in his favor. (Wednesday) happens to be his daughter’s birthday, too, so you made it even more special.”
In other business, council members:
• Approved the hiring of eight part-time police officers.
• Accepted the resignations of David Homeschek and Jared Beilman from the police department.
• Accepted the resignations of Robert Webb and Ed Ameika from the sewer authority.
