DALLAS — Borough manager Tracey Carr remembers attending the Dallas Summer Recreation Program as a child. On Wednesday, Carr announced children enrolled in the 2016 Summer Recreation Program will attend Planet Appreciation Day on June 30.

Planet Appreciation Day is an educational event aimed at teaching the importance of keeping waterways clean, said Carr.

The 2016 Summer Recreation Program is a cooperative outdoors program for children ages 6 to 12 residing in Dallas Borough and Dallas Township.

The program incorporates a variety of sports, arts and crafts and other activities from June 20 to August 12 at the Kenneth Young Memorial Park on Burndale Road.

“The event (Planet Appreciation Day) is only open to the children of the recreation program,” Carr said, citing required security clearances require for counselors prevents the event from opening to the general public.

The longstanding children’s summer program is a tradition in Back Mountain communities.

“It has been held for at least 30 years,” Carr said. “I remember going to it (summer recreation program) when I was a kid.”

The program usually had a high attendance, but Carr noted enrollment has fallen over the last few years.

“We use to have close to 100 children enrolled,” she said. “Every year, enrollment has been going down. Last year, we had about 70 children. This year there are only about 40 registered.”

To boost the program’s attendance numbers, Carr is still accepting registration for the 2016 Summer Recreation Program.

Registration fee is $50 for the first child and $25 for siblings who reside in the same home, she said. Parents or caregivers interested in the program may enroll their children at the borough office, or call 570-675-1389 for information.

In other news, new 25-mile-per-hour speed limit signs will be installed on White Tail Drive, Doe Drive, Fawn Drive, Hickory Street and Dawn Meadow Dive.

“There were never any signs up at these locations,” said borough council vice president Charles Youngman.

Also, council members will hold a public hearing regarding Clancy’s Bar & Grill LLC’s request to transfer a liquor license from Wyoming Borough to Dallas Borough for a proposed new restaurant at 1174 Twin Stacks Drive. The hearing is slated for 6:30 p.m. July 20 at the municipal building.

The next regular monthly council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 20 at the municipal building.
