DALLAS TWP. — The teacher strike at Dallas School District has been postponed a second time as negotiations progress. The strike date has been moved from Oct. 25 to Nov. 23.

In an email Wednesday evening, Dallas School District teacher union president Michael Cherinka said both sides “have continued to exchange proposals and have made a little more progress during the past few meetings.” The strike date was changed “to allow us more time to attempt to reach an agreement.”

Negotiation sessions have been scheduled for Oct. 25, Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 15.

The union initially set a strike date of Sept. 28, but on Sept. 22 pushed it to Oct. 25, citing progress in a flurry of meetings.

Teachers have been working under terms of an expired contract since the end of August, 2015.

By state law, teachers can strike two times in one school year. The first strike must end in time to complete 180 school days by June 15. The second strike must end in time to complete 180 days by June 30.

Both sides must submit to non-binding arbitration following a first strike , providing their “final best offers” to a third party, who proposes a resolution. If either side rejects the proposal, a second strike becomes a legal option.
