WILKES-BARRE — A Kingston man who police said bought crack cocaine with cash he stole from his mother will spend two to four years in state prison.

Robert James Burns, 29, of Chestnut Avenue, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Luzerne County Court to two felony counts of burglary and related charges and was immediately sentenced. Additional counts of burglary, theft, trespassing, and conspiracy were dropped in exchange for his plea.

Burns, according to police, stole a purse containing cash and credit cards from Mary Ellen Burns’ home on South Atherton Avenue in Kingston in January. Police say he used $160 of her money to buy crack cocaine and obtained more drugs by trading two video game consoles bought using her Kohl’s credit card.

Police say Burns also made off with his mother’s Honda CRV, but was later pulled over driving it.

In a separate case from 2011, Burns pleaded guilty to charges he smashed the front window of the Convenient Food Mark on Pierce Street in Kingston with a hammer and stole $19 and four packs of cigarettes. An informant identified Burns as the culprit, according to the affidavit. The owners told police the cost to repair the storefront was $725.

Court records show Burns was charged with burglarizing Theo’s Metro in Kingston in 2012 and a residence on Chester Avenue in 2011.
