KINGSTON — Wendy Thompson picked up toys from the floor of Brody’s Closet, while Santa stood outside waving to traffic.

“It’s been a pretty good day,” Thompson said as she put away the kids’ playthings.

Saturday marked the grand opening for the children’s consignment shop, and Thompson’s family, including the titular Brody, Thompson’s grandson, joined her in the space to welcome customers.

During a lull in activity, Thompson’s family described the morning as “excellent” and “fantastic,” saying they had made some sales, and the children who visited enjoyed playing with the plethora of toys around the shop.

“It’s like Black Friday,” joked Lenny Davies, Thompson’s nephew.

Describing the early morning, Thompson said, a group of 10 children played throughout the store while their parents shopped. “There were toys everywhere,” she said.

The child-friendly atmosphere makes Brody’s unique. “It’s not your typical consignment shop,” Thompson’s husband, Ross Sr., said. The store doesn’t only sell clothing and toys. Thompson is selling blankets, bows and other goods made by people in the community.

After other children cleared out, Brody, 8, and Davies’ daughter, Addisyn, 2, continued to put the toys to use.

And while Brody was busy playing, he did say it was “kind of” exciting to be able to tell his friends there is a store named after him.
