PITTSTON — Council decided Wednesday to apply for state gambling grants to pay for a variety of potential projects.

The first application, the Pittston City Yards and Equipment/Vehicle grant, is for $524,000 and would be used to expand the public works building.

The second, an application for more than $600,000, is dubbed the Pittston Neighborhood Initiative grant. It would be used for improving blighted properties and assist with constructing senior housing.

The last – for $1.8 million – would be used primarily for the Luzerne County Community College campus on South Main Street.

The grants will not be awarded until later this year.

In other business last night:

• Council members accepted the resignation of Joe Long from the Pittston Memorial Library Board of Directors and approved the appointment of Jenny Long to the board beginning Feb. 15 and concluding Oct. 1.

They also appointed Claire Ellen Hopple and Lisa Joyce to the board. Joyce’s term will run from Oct. 1, 2016, to Sept. 30, 2019.

• Council also made a motion to upgrade computers in the police department.
