PITTSTON — A dog died in a fire that heavily damaged a house on Landon Street here Monday afternoon.

But two people inside got out safely, Pittston fire chief Jim Rooney said.

“We had heavy fire on the first floor. Three people live there. Two people were home at the time,” Rooney said. There were no injuries except for the dog, he added.

The chief said a state police fire marshal was contacted to investigate the blaze that was reported around 3:40 p.m.

The house is located at the intersection of a narrow street and alley, but there were no problems fighting the flames.

“Our crews did an incredible job,” Rooney said.

The front door and porch that faced the alley were blackened from the smoke and flames.

Rooney said West Pittston and Jenkins Township fire departments and the Greater Pittston Regional Ambulance Service assisted.

The American Red Cross of Northeast PA also was on the scene to offer assistance to the residents.
