The Times Leader, in conjunction with its news-gathering partner Fox 56, will live stream a town hall entitled “Guns in America” at 7 p.m. tonight.
The event will be held at Center Penn College in Summerdale and hosted by CBS 21.
It will feature David Keene, former president of the National Rifle Association, and Shira Goodman, executive director of Ceasefire PA.
Keene was president of the NRA from 2011 to 2013. He currently is the opinion editor of the Washington Times. He has worked for the political campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole and Mitt Romney.
He was chairman of the American Conservative Union from 1984 until 2011. According to his profile on the NRA website, friends have nicknamed him “Baby Doc David Keene,” comparing his ability as a conservative power broker to Jean-Claude Duvalier’s iron-fisted rule of Haiti.
“The armed citizenry is the final bulwark against tyranny,” Keene told a newspaper in 2013. “That’s why the Second Amendment was written.
“It was not written to protect squirrel hunters.”
Goodman has extensive experience with nonprofits and joined Ceasefire PA after 10 years as a public policy advocate working for better courts in the state and a career in labor law, according to her profile on Ceasefire PA’s website.
“CeaseFirePA is a statewide organization working with mayors, police chiefs, faith leaders, community organizations, and individual Pennsylvanians to take a stand against gun violence,” according to its website. “Through outreach, education, coalition building, and advocacy, we work to reduce gun violence and gun tragedies in our communities, stop the flow of illegal guns onto our streets, and keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.”
