WILKES-BARRE TWP. — JCPenney will remain open at the Wyoming Valley Mall.

J.C. Penney Co. released a list of 138 store closures on Friday, and the Wilkes-Barre Township location was noticeably missing from that list.

Earlier this month report by Morningstar Credit Ratings listed the Wyoming Valley Mall store as a store identified as most at risk for closing.

It’s at least partially due to the local site’s below-average sales, the report noted.

The company announced plans in February to close between 130 and 140 stores and two distribution centers over the next few months.

A news release from the company’s corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas, states these strategic decisions will help align the company’s brick-and-mortar presence with its “omnichannel network,” thereby redirecting capital resources to invest in locations and initiatives that offer the greatest revenue potential.

J.C. Penney store at the Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre Township will not close as part of the company’s restructuring.
