Today is a day to celebrate puppies, dogs and unconditional love — March 23 is National Puppy Day!

According to the official National Puppy Day website, the holiday was founded in 2006 by Colleen Paige, a pet and home expert and author.

The website states: “National Puppy Day is a special day to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring to our lives. But more importantly, it’s a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills.”

National Puppy Day is now considered an international holiday.

The site also has a list of the 50 ways you can celebrate National Puppy Day, including donating food, toys and money to local animal shelters; adopting a puppy; or buying your special puppy friend a fun, new toy.
