SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — A car window was smashed out near Clarks Summit, and police say it could be the result of plows cleaning snow after the blizzard on a huge bridge over the road.

Stephen Gary and his wife were enjoying their Monday evening, going to get Mexican food around 5:30 p.m.

“We were just stopped at a red light and waiting to go to Moe’s. We took our dog on a little walk by the the elementary school,” Gary told Times Leader news gathering partner Fox 56.

But, Gary said, something strange happened by a stoplight, under a bridge for the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

“We felt something like an impact come down on the car and I looked and my window was shattered,” Gary said.

The Scranton resident said he and his wife, Patricia, couldn’t figure out what had happened. No one seemed to have hit them and there was nothing in the car.

“Because they were beeping the horn, we wanted to get out of the traffic’s way, so we couldn’t see anything on the ground,” Gary said. “But there was a gentleman that pulled in back of us and told us he saw like ice and snow that was falling.”

They pulled over to a Weis supermarket and had a police report taken. They looked up and saw plowing on the highway above them.

Gary says he’s not planning to sue anyone. He’s just glad he’s OK.

Township Manager David O’Neill says he’s heard of pieces of ice falling from the bridge, but that was before the roadway was recently replaced in a major construction project that’s about to be formally closed.

“Will it happen again, perhaps? I hope not,” O’Neill said.
