WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes-Barre Area School District is investigating the alleged illegal use of a Dumpster at GAR Memorial High School.

Superintendent Brian Costello issued a brief email statement noting the district had received several reports of illegal use of its Dumpsters.

“After receiving this information, I instructed our Director of Police Operations (Brian Lavan) to contact the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department to request a full joint investigation regarding this matter.”

Costello added that “no further comment will be available at this time due to the ongoing investigation.”

While illegal use of school Dumpsters could drive costs up, GAR, like the district’s other two high schools, faces much bigger financial issues. The district has been grappling with a roof leak for months, and it recently authorized extensive exploratory work to check masonry behind the facade cladding.
